Muay Thai today is an internationally celebrated sport with fighters competing across the globe. 50 years ago, however, Muay Thai was an obscure sport that had not quite penetrated mainstream American fight culture. That changed when Mark DellaGrotte traveled to Thailand and eventually brought a piece of it back with him to Boston.
Before he ever left America, Mark's training began with classical martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Shodukan, and Tai-chi. As his athleticism and martial skill grew, so did his desire to further his training. Mark began to research all martial arts from across the globe, and his quest for knowledge lead him to meet incredible people from all walks of life.

In 1992, Mark met a man named Guro Guy Chase who had studied with some of the greatest martial artists of his time, including Sifu Dan Inosanto, Grandmaster Ben Largusa, Pak Herman Suwanda, Guro Ted Lucay, Professor Salam Allsi, Arjarn Surachai Sirisute and even the great Karl Gotch. At that point, Mark devoted himself entirely to the martial arts and began extensive training. He became certified in the arts of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, Indonesian Pencak Silat, Boxe Francaise Savate, Filipino Kali-Escrima, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Muay Thai Kickboxing. By 1997, Mark had scoured his available resources for training, but he wanted to take his training even further than what was available in the United States. He decided to travel abroad to Thailand, and he was quickly introduced to Kru Yodtong and the Sityodtong Boxing Camp in Pattaya.
After traveling to Thailand many times to train with Kru Yodtong, Mark eventually received the blessing to teach the art in America. Sityodtong Boston was born that day, and we have continued to operate ever since!
