1. I have no experience with Muay Thai or MMA. Can I still train at Sityodtong?
Absolutely! Many of our students come to us without any kind of training. During your first class, one of our trainers will work with you on the fundamental skills you’ll need to participate in the beginner classes. All of our beginner classes are designed to be accessible to any student, even those without prior training.
2. Do I need to be shape before I start training?
Not at all; while being in shape certainly helps, we have found that most students gain tremendous physical benefits just from the training. With consistent training, you’ll develop strength and stamina for inside and outside the gym. You should consult with a doctor prior to embarking on ANY kind of exercise program.
3. I’m not sure if I want to do this or not. Can I try out a class?
Certainly! Give us a call at 617-627-9678 to schedule a trial lesson, or fill out our Trial Class Form.
4. What equipment do I need?
Muay Thai students should have: 16oz boxing gloves, shin pads, and a mouthpiece. Men should also have a groin protector.
Mixed Martial Arts Students should have: MMA Training gloves, shin pads, and a mouthpiece. Men should also have a groin protector.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu students should have: A mouthpiece. Men should also have a groin protector.
5. How often can I train?
All of our memberships are unlimited, which means that you can attend as many classes as you want to, provided you are at an appropriate skill level (advanced classes are not suitable for beginners, for example).
6. Are there women training at Sityodtong?
Our classes are open to everyone, and many women participate in our Muay Thai, MMA, and BJJ classes. We also offer a women’s only class on Saturday mornings.
7. What are Muay Thai, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ)?
Muay Thai is the Thai national sport of kickboxing, which focuses on striking with the hands, feet, shins, knees, and elbows.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling art that teaches its students how to fight on the ground using leverage and technique to overcome an opponent’s strength.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a modern combat sport that permits competitors to strike, throw, and grapple in a single contest. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is the most well-know form of MMA competition.
For more information on these arts, please see our class descriptions page.
8. Do I have to fight to train at Sityodtong?
Not at all. Many of our students train simply to get in shape, learn a new skill, or just enjoy the growth that comes with practicing a martial art.
9. I want to train, but I can’t make the scheduled classes. Is it possible for me to do private training?
Yes. Many of our trainers offer private and semi-private lessons. Contact us for more information.
10. I want to fight! When can I?
If you are interested in competing, speak with one of our coaching staff. While we encourage anyone who is interested and dedicated to compete, we also want to be certain that our students are physically and mentally prepared for the challenge.
11. This stuff looks really dangerous! Do people get hurt doing this?
Our top priority in all of our classes is ensuring the safety of our students. While occasional accidents do occur, the rate of injury for most of our students is no greater than in any other sport.
12. Where can I park my car?
Metered on street parking is available along Broadway ($0.25 per 15 min). City of Somerville parking meters are required to be paid until 8pm. City parking is free to all Somerville residents as long as you have a Somerville parking permit.
